Windows 7 unable to start "backup and restore"
New Win 7 Pro64 install on new Photoshop i7 build. 120Gb SSD for boot and second 60 GB for PS scratch plus 2 TB WD hard drives
I am unable to do any kind of restore point or system image, and the control panel says "Windows Backup has not been set up"
Set up then fails and stalls for quite some time. Eventually I have to kill it in Task Man.
I have spent hours trying to find a solution in various groups, but none of the suggestions have yielded results.
Any help gladly accepted!

thank you for the reply.
I have followed the procedures for Windows backup as I understand them. The whole process stalls at "Starting Windows Backup." If I try to "Create a system image" the process stalls at "Looking for backup devices."
I also have been through the file reset and deleting any automatic backups. There were no entries under the reg key for WindowsBackup except for the top line (Default REG_Z value not set) . Still the problem presists.
This is frustrating...
tnx

Hi,
Have you verified the related services?
Step 1:-Verify the (Volume Shadow Service) VSS service:
a. Click "Start", type "services.msc" (without quotation marks) in the Search bar and press Enter.
b. Double click "Volume Shadow Copy Service" and switch to "General" tab.
c. Change the "Startup type" to "Automatic" and click "Apply".
d. Click Start and click OK.
Step 2:-Verify the Windows backup Service:
a. Click "Start", type "services.msc" (without quotation marks) in the Search bar and press Enter.
b. Double click "Windows backup" and switch to "General" tab.
c. Change the "Startup type" to "Automatic" and click "Apply".
d. Click "Start" and click "OK".
If the issue persists, you can open logs through Event Viewer from C:\Windows\Logs\WindowsBackup.

Niki
thank you for your help.
Both Windows backup and VSS services are (now) running and set to automatic. The dependencies for winbackup are also running and set to auto.
Still get the never ending "Set up backup" Starting...please wait...(see screenshot below)
I opened the WindowsBackup.etl logfile. It's not too meaningful to an end-user like me- filled with code which is NEARLY incomprehensible.
I did filter however out all the "" characters, and I find these potentially relevant failures:
CSdBackupConfigImpl::GetConfig i FAILED j
CSdCommonImpl::QueryLastBackupSet FAILED
ThreadPoolWorker_QueryLastBackupSetImpl FAILED
CSdCatalog::QueryLastBackupSet FAILED
These were gleaned from two of the last attempts to start backup. The current attempt, with the (recommended) KNOWN GOOD service startups, may end up deing different from this log info. It's been running for 40 minutes now, so apparently this has also failed.
I will probably have to kill it in control panel. I don't have any idea how terminating
sdclt.exe results in the log file...
Any idea what all this means or more importantly, how to fix it? The capability of the OS to image a fresh known good boot drive is the primary reason I went for this version.
